DJI has introduced a remote control with a built-in screen as part of the CES fair. This means that owners of certain DJI drones are no longer dependent on, for example, a smartphone for displaying the images.

DJI reports that the Smart Controller ensures that drone owners do not have to use their smartphone or tablet for long to control their drone including images. The remote has a 5.5″ screen with a 1080p resolution that achieves a peak brightness of 1000cd/m², so that it should still be reasonably usable in sunlight.

Owners of the recently released DJI drones can take advantage of the Smart Controller. It concerns drones from the Mavic 2 series, namely the Pro, Zoom and Enterprise. Owners of other drones equipped with DJI’s OcuSync 2.0 video transmission system can also use the remote control. OcuSync 2.0 automatically switches between 2.4 and 5.8GHz and guarantees a stable video connection up to a distance of 8km, according to DJI.

According to the manufacturer, the Smart Controller can be used in temperatures between -20 and 40 degrees Celsius. At even warmer or colder temperatures, the device can probably still be used, but then a reliable HD connection is no longer self-evident. The remote control lasts 2.5 hours on a battery charge. Any captured photos or videos can be shared with a smartphone using the built-in DJI GO 4 app. The device uses an Android dashboard.

DJI’s Smart Controller is available for 649 euros, but the device can also be purchased in a bundle with the Mavic 2 Pro or the Mavic 2 Zoom.
