IOS 14.6 notifies Apple Watch Series 3 users to unpair, empty, and reset their smartwatch from a backup to receive the watchOS update. Due to lack of space it was previously impossible to update.

To update the Watch Series 3 to watchOS 7.5, users are prompted to unpair their Apple Watch Series 3 from the iPhone during the update process and reset from backup. That reports 9to5Mac . This is because the GPS-only version of the smartwatch with 8GB has too little space for software updates.

Until recently, it was almost impossible to update the smartwatch to a new version of the OS, because in many cases it received a message that there was not enough space to perform the update. For an update, at least 3GB of free storage space on the smartwatch was required. Apple’s solution to this is that in iOS 14.6, it prompts users to reset Watch. This frees up space for the latest watchOS update.

Apple has been proposing for some time to unpair the Watch 3 and re-pair it with the iPhone due to lack of space. What’s new is that this is automatically suggested in iOS 14.6. Earlier, Apple only proposed to free up space for an update. In addition, all data and settings of the Apple Watch are erased after the Apple Watch is backed up. With this backup, users can retrieve their settings and data after the update. Again, there must be enough space, but space should have been freed up because old updates have been removed.

MacRumors argues that the cumbersome way of updating is an indication that Apple plans to phase out the Watch Series 3, which was released in September 2017, and that a new model of the Apple Watch will be released this year.
