AMD has more than seen the number of Opteron processors sold double in the fourth quarter of 2005. Compared to the fourth quarter in 2004, sales increased by no less than 154 percent. AMD is taking advantage of Intel’s market share, which saw sales increase by about 7 percent in the same period. AMD’s market share in the x86 server market increased from 4.9 percent to 10.9 percent during this period. Exact numbers are not known, but it is estimated that this corresponds to about 200,000 Opteron processors, while Intel was able to sell about 1.7 million Xeon processors. Although Intel’s market share is considerably larger than AMD’s, Intel is well under pressure put.
