WSJ: Google is working on second VR glasses with their own screen and processor

Google is not only working on a new VR viewer for smartphones, but also on a stand-alone headset that works without a PC, console or smartphone. This version will have its own screen and processor and might be released this year.

In addition to its own screen and, according to the Wall Street Journal, “high-powered” processors, the VR headset would contain outward-facing cameras. Google would partner with the company Movidius on the use of these motion-tracking cameras. The WSJ is unable to provide further details; a source from the company claims the headset could be released this year, while another source speaks of a project that is in an early stage and may not lead to a product.

Last week, the Financial Times ran a rumor that Google is coming out with a new smartphone VR headset that is more advanced than its cardboard Cardboard model. This would make Google a competitor of Samsung, which sells its Gear VR glasses. With the new standalone version, Google would compete with Oculus, HTC and Sony, but the distinguishing feature would be that no PC or console is needed.
