Tesla comes with ccs adapter for Model S and X for fast charging without Supercharger

From June 1, Tesla can make older Model S and Model X cars suitable for fast charging via a CCS adapter. This makes fast charging with a relatively high power also possible in locations other than Supercharger locations.

Tesla indicates that a service adjustment for Combined Charging System Combo 2, which therefore includes a hardware update, costs a total of 500 euros. That includes the cost of the necessary adapter. It is for sale separately for 170 euros. Every Model S and X manufactured after May 1, 2019 is already compliant with this standard, but older production versions of the two models are not.

Existing models of the Model X and S use a Type 2 connector. This plug is also used for public charging stations. This Type 2 connector is to some extent a limitation for owners of the so-called Legacy Model S or X. They can go to fast chargers that are not from Tesla, but then a Chademo adapter is needed and the power is a maximum of 50 kW. After the service adjustment, the adapter can be used to charge with 120kW on fast chargers from Fastned or Allego, for example.

In fact, ccs is already the standard throughout Europe. The Type 2 connector was previously chosen for the Model S and X, because that was already the standard for alternating current and there was no prospect of a European standard for fast charging via direct current at that time. Due to various modifications, it can handle both alternating and direct current. With the current dominance of CCs, this is a disadvantage, something Tesla wants to respond to with the service adjustment. This can be useful for Model S or X riders who don’t live near a Supercharger and need to use a fast charger from another company.

a ccs plug; this is not the adaptor.
