Apple wants to announce an M2 and M2 Pro soc in the foreseeable future, 9to5Mac reports. Those socs are debuting in new Mac minis. They are a refresh of the M1 from 2020 and based on the A15 Bionic soc from the iPhone 13 phones.

Apple would increase the number of cpu or gpu cores in the M2 socs compared to the M1 variants, 9to5Mac reports. Moreover, the soc is based on newer architecture, because the M1 is based on an A13 soc. Apple presented both socs in 2020. The combination of both factors should lead to an improvement in performance.

The Mac minis with the M2 and M2 Pro are called J473 and J474, the site reports. The development of both products is said to be nearing completion, with the products expected to be released later this year. A first opportunity for a presentation would be the WWDC developer conference. Apple occasionally shows new hardware there. The conference usually takes place in June.

The site knows nothing about a possible M2 Max and M2 Ultra. Max and Ultra versions of the M1 did appear. Apple announced the latter this week. The M1 Ultra is a combination of two M1 Max socs connected to a proprietary interconnect Apple calls UltraFusion and has a throughput of 2.5TB/s.
