NEC reports server breach at defense division

Japanese technology group NEC confirms that it was the victim of an attack that accessed servers of its defense division. The attackers managed to access more than 27,000 files.

These are attacks that started in 2016 and continued in the years after, according to the NEC communication, which was drafted in Japanese. The company claims that although a total of 27,445 files have been accessed, it is not classified information. The company also reports that there is no damage, that measures have been taken to prevent a recurrence and that customers whose files have been affected have been informed.

According to Japanese newspapers such as Nikkei, the Japanese Ministry of Defense has said that the contracts are, but that there are no defense secrets involved and that there are no consequences for the Japanese defense system. Bleeping Computer publishes about the publication in Nikkei. That site writes that Mitsubishi Electric also announced an attack on its systems ten days ago. That attack took place via a hijacked account, which gave the perpetrators access to the internal network.
