Microsoft is investigating issues with reactivation of upgraded Windows 7/8 keys

Windows 10 or 11 users who want to reactivate their previously upgraded Windows 7 or 8 key may find themselves unable to use their key due to an error. The problem occurs with users who, for example, buy a new motherboard. Microsoft is investigating the problem.

Until September this year, users could use their Windows 7 or Windows 8 key while installing Windows 10 or Windows 11 to activate those operating systems. The older Windows key is upgraded to a Windows 10 or 11 key.

Since discontinuing that installation method, users are reporting according to The Verge that they can no longer use the key they previously upgraded to Windows 10 or 11 to reactivate those operating systems. This concerns, for example, users with a Windows 10 or 11 system who have replaced their motherboard or upgraded their BIOS, after which the operating system requests a reactivation.

Users should then be able to use their Windows 10 or 11 key, but for unknown reasons this is not possible. Microsoft tells The Verge that it is aware of the reported issues and is investigating them. At the moment the only solution is to purchase a new Windows key. It is not clear how many users are affected by this problem.
