Hardkernel has announced its Odroid-HC4. This is a kind of NAS with two bays, which can accommodate 2.5 “and 3.5” drives. The HC4 will start at a suggested retail price of $ 65 and will be released on October 27.

The Odroid HC4 has a small housing that can accommodate two SSDs or HDDs, although these will largely protrude from the top of the device. Hardkernel itself speaks of a ‘toaster form factor’. The HC4 uses a PCIe to SATA controller for the two drives. In the previous HC2, which features a single bay, the company used a USB 3.0 to SATA controller.

The system uses an Amlogic S905X-soc with four Cortex-A55 cores at 1.8GHz. The HC4 features 4GB DDR4 memory and a MicroSD card reader for the OS, although the OS can also be loaded from any of the SATA drives. Furthermore, the system has gigabit ethernet, HDMI 2.0 and a single USB 2.0 connection. The whole is powered by a DC connector.

There is currently only an official Ubuntu 20.04 image based on Linux 4.9.230 available for the HC4, but in time, third party Linux distros should also be available for the device. For example, CoreELEC, OpenMediaVault and Android should appear ‘within a few weeks’ for the HC4.

Hardkernel mentions a suggested retail price of $ 65 on its website. For $ 10 more, the company includes a real-time clock and a 1-inch OLED screen. The company also lists several accessories on its forum, including an IR remote and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth adapters.
