According to research firms Gartner and IDC, worldwide PC sales during the last quarter of 2022 were 28 percent lower than during the same quarter in 2021. In all of 2022, PC shipments fell 16.2 percent. From 2024, the market should recover.

According to IDC about 292.3 million PCs were shipped worldwide last year, with 67.2 million during the fourth quarter. Gartner puts it at 286.2 million units for all of 2022 and 65.3 million in the fourth quarter. According to a Gartner analyst the fall in demand for PCs is mainly due to rising inflation, higher interest rates and fears of a global recession. In addition, many consumers would have a PC that was purchased during the corona pandemic.

According to IDC, average selling prices for PCs have started to fall in recent months as manufacturers try to clear their inventories. The research agency states that price changes may also take place in the near future. Both research firms expect demand for PCs to recover in 2024, while the first signs of recovery will be noticeable as early as the end of 2023, according to IDC.

The PC manufacturers with the largest global market share in 2022 were Lenovo, HP, Dell, Apple and ASUS. Lenovo achieved a market share of 24.1 percent in 2022, HP one of 19.4 percent, Dell 17.5 percent, Apple 9.8 percent and ASUS 7.2 percent.
