Deliveries of smartphones from Moto owner Lenovo fall 25 percent

Deliveries of smartphones from Motorola owner Lenovo have fallen 25 percent in recent months compared to the same quarter last year. Contrary to expectations, the company as a whole made a small profit financially.

Lenovo does not provide an explanation for the large drop in smartphone shipments. Instead, it hides the decline and compares deliveries with those of the months before. This is unusual for manufacturers, because phone deliveries vary by season and also depend on releases; Lenovo has released many new phones in recent months.

Where Lenovo delivered 18.8 million smartphones in the summer months last year, that was 14 million in recent months. In those months, Lenovo released a new version of its best-selling smartphone series, the Moto G. It appeared in multiple variants: the G4 Play, G4 and G4 Plus. The Moto Z, Moto Z Force and Moto Z Play were also released, although they were only available to a limited extent in the quarter.

In the PC market, Lenovo shipped 14.5 million devices, down 3.2 percent from the same period a year ago. As a result, Lenovo’s deliveries fell less than those of the market as a whole, the Chinese manufacturer notes.

Lenovo’s net income was $157 million, compared to a loss of $714 million last year. That happens at an 8 percent lower turnover of 11.2 billion dollars.
