WhatsApp lets users send higher resolution photos

WhatsApp has gained the ability to send ‘HD’ photos, with a maximum resolution of 4096×2692 pixels, it seems. It is unknown how much compression is applied to the images.

By default, the option is not enabled and it cannot be set as default. Users must select the ‘HD’ option for each transmission. The standard ‘non-HD’ quality, confusingly, has a resolution of 1080×1920 pixels. WABetaInfo claimed in January that the ability to send photos in original quality was still on the way.

Meta leader Mark Zuckerberg also says that sending ‘HD’ video in WhatsApp is also a possibility that is being worked on. That’s coming ‘soon’. The ‘HD’ photo functionality will be ‘rolled out in the coming weeks’, writes The Verge based on Zuckerberg’s announcement. The option was already available on this editor’s Android device.
