Unity Technologies has announced that its latest version of the engine will also support the New Nintendo 3DS. Unity for New Nintendo 3DS is available for free to developers who are registered with Nintendo.

Unity states that they also support the original 3DS. The company claims to be able to create files that work with the 3DS, some of which also run well on it. For a large amount of games, the New Nintendo 3DS is still recommended because of the more powerful hardware.

Unity for New Nintendo 3DS is Unity’s first platform to use only proprietary IL2CPP technology. The internal code for the shader has changed in version 5.2, which makes the code cleaner and also performs better. At the same time, it solves some problems with consoles. Not all options are available in the initial release of the engine, including UNet, which is used for multiplayer and Shadow Maps. The order in which new features are added is based on what users request.

The company is working with multiple developers to bring existing games to the New Nintendo 3DS. One of the games has even made it to Nintendo’s system. Wind Up Knight 2 went on sale in Japan in late 2015. Although the engine is available for free to developers, there is a rule where the developer has to pay when his game exceeds a certain turnover.

Unity Technologies announced in 2015 that it would support the New Nintendo 3DS. The company did this during its own trade show. Unity already includes support for Windows, OS X, Linux, Android, Xbox One, Wii U, PlayStation 4 and Oculus Rift.
