Toshiba has announced a new model in its high-end Regza line that is equipped with a Cell processor. The Cell Regza 55X1 has a 55″ screen with LED backlight and local dimming, and has 3TB of storage in the external tuner.

The multicore Cell Broadband Engine 2 processor in the new appliance can, according to Toshiba, release various image enhancement algorithms on HD images at high speed. The device also has LED backlights that can be dimmed in 512 separate places. Partly thanks to local dimming, the Japanese manufacturer states that the 55X1 can achieve a dynamic contrast of 5,000,000:1. Furthermore, Toshiba claims that the TV delivers a brightness of 1250cd/m2 and a refresh rate of 240Hz. The separate soundbar under the display is equipped with seven speakers.

The separate tuner has 3TB of hard disk storage, of which 2TB is used for timeshifting. The tuner can store up to eight television channels for 26 hours. In addition, the Cell processor can display eight channels simultaneously on the screen. Toshiba also claims to have developed an advanced program guide search function. The LCD television can also be connected to the local network and play content via the DLNA protocol, while the integrated Opera browser can be used to surf the web.

According to Toshiba, the 44kg LCD screen uses a maximum of 320W, while the separate tuner consumes 140W. The Regza 55X1 has so far only been announced for the Japanese market. The high-end device should be available from December and will have a price tag of approximately 7600 euros.
