The Document Foundation has released version 6.0 of its LibreOffice software for word processing, presentations and spreadsheets, among other things. According to the organization, it is a major release for the open source software.

One of the innovations is that OpenPGP can be used to sign documents in ODF format. This requires users to install the correct GPG software for their system, according to The Document Foundation in the announcement. It is also possible to use OpenPGP for encryption, but that is still an experimental feature. This also applies to the counterpart of the Ribbon from Microsoft Office, introduced in version 5.3, which is called Notebookbar in LibreOffice.

This remains an experimental function, but will be expanded with a grouped bar and tabbed compact variant. In addition, special characters should be easier to find in the appropriate dialog box with the addition of recently used characters and a search box. In the word processor Writer, a forms menu has been added that provides access to a tool to create PDF forms. Furthermore, the ratio of slides in the presentation software Impress has been changed to 16:9 to ‘take into account recent screens’.

Finally, a function has been added to export documents as epub3 file in Writer and it is now possible to import QuarkXPress files. The full overview of all changes can be found in the release notes. The new version can now be downloaded from the LibreOffice site.
