Tesla is going to equip already sold cars with new computer hardware. Anyone who has purchased full self-driving can look forward to the upgrade at no cost. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has announced this.

Henceforth, the computer upgrade for Autopilot Hardware 3.0 will be called “Full Self-Driving Computer” and this will be available at no additional cost for customers who have purchased the FSD Enhanced Autopilot Support Upgrade. The upgrade will now cost $2,000 instead of $5,000 Musk announced in early March. Existing cars are only eligible for the upgrade if the software is optimized for the new hardware.

Elon Musk also emphasized that only the computer should be replaced, not the sensors and wiring. Many details about the new platform are not yet known, but it would become much more powerful and greatly expand the possibilities for autonomous driving.

It seems that the computing platform will have a neural net accelerator designed by Tesla itself, Electrek previously described. Tesla has hired several chip architects for the hardware platform. Apple’s former chip architect Peter Bannon leads the team, but several former AMD engineers are also employed by Tesla.
