‘Tesla talks to music labels about its own streaming service’

Automaker Tesla is in talks with record labels about licenses for its own streaming service, according to various sources from tech site Recode. This service allows users of Tesla cars to listen to music in their car.

The music labels like to talk to Tesla, because the streaming services market has some big players and the labels think that more competition wouldn’t hurt, Recode says. Tesla would like to offer some subscription plans, with the cheapest option being a ‘radio’ option with music chosen by the service based on users’ preferences. More expensive options probably offer their own playlists.

Tesla now has a deal with Spotify for much of the world to put that service in the software of cars. That deal does not apply to the United States, the home country of the maker of electric cars.

If Tesla comes with its own music service that is only intended for cars, the number of customers will not run into the tens of millions for the time being as with competitors Apple and Spotify. Tesla sold 76,000 cars last year, although the number is set to rise much further this year.
