Sony sold more PlayStation 4s in the past quarter than a year ago and revenue from software for the consoles also increased. Sony also delivered more high-end televisions, but fewer Xperia smartphones were sold.

The quarterly sales of Sony’s Game & Services Network Segment increased by 35.4 percent due to strong sales of PlayStation 4 hardware and software. Sony delivered 4.2 million PS4s in the past quarter, compared to 3.9 million units in the same period last year. In total, Sony has now shipped 67.5 million PS4s worldwide. Sony has raised its expectations for delivery numbers for its fiscal year 2017.

The Home Entertainment division also achieved positive results. Sony delivered 3.2 million TVs in the past three months, compared to 3.1 million last year, but they were also mostly high-end models. As a result, the turnover of this division increased by 28.1 percent compared to last year.

The Mobile Communications division continues to underperform: Sony shipped 3.4 million Xperia smartphones, compared to 3.5 million units in the same quarter last year. Sony also has to deal with higher costs for smartphone parts. Although the division’s turnover increased slightly by 1.9 percent, higher costs and the negative impact of exchange rate differences between the yen and the dollar caused the smartphone branch an operating loss of 2.5 billion yen, equivalent to 19 million euros.

Sony benefited from a slight increase in the supply of cameras, but mainly from a strong increase in the supply of camera sensors for smartphones. As a result of the latter, the turnover of the semiconductor branch increased by 17.9 percent.

In the end, Sony’s quarterly turnover amounted to 2062 billion yen, or 15.7 billion euros. That was 22 percent higher than last year. The profit increased from 950 million euros to 1 billion euros.
