Sony has presented a smaller version of its Xperia 1 smartphone. The phone measures 15.8×6.8cm, making it significantly larger than the most recent Xperia Compact phones released by Sony.

The Xperia 5 has an OLED screen of 14.2 x 6.1 cm, good for a surface of 87 square centimeters. The screen has a diagonal of 6.1″ and a resolution of 2520×1080 pixels. That’s the same 21:9 aspect ratio as the Xperia 1 and Xperia 10 phones. The phone measures 15.8×6.8cm, compared to 13.5×6.5cm of the latest Compact phone, the XZ2 Compact.

The device has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855-soc with 6GB of memory and 128GB of UFS storage. The cameras are similar to those of the Xperia 1, although they are in the top left corner instead of centered on the back. The primary camera has a 1/2.6″ sensor with 1.4 micrometer pixels, optical image stabilization and an f/1.6 lens. In addition, the Xperia 5 has an ultra-wide-angle camera and a telephoto camera, both with a 1 /3.4″ sensor and f/2.4 lens. Eye Autofocus is also included in the phone.

The device runs on Android 9.0 Pie and will receive support for the Sony DualShock 4, the wireless controller that can also be used on PlayStation consoles. iPhones will also receive support for this controller with iOS 13. The battery of the phone has a capacity of 3140mAh, charging is via the USB-C port. A 3.5mm jack is missing. The 164 gram housing is dust and waterproof with an ip65/68 certification.

Sony will release the Xperia 5 in October, for an unknown price. Web stores have it for around 800 euros. Sony does include a WF-1000XM3 with preorders, Sony’s wireless earphones with noise canceling.
