Leica will probably come with a new camera in the M-series. This is apparent from the registration of the Leica M Typ 262 with the Russian Novocert and the Korean RRA. It may be a successor to the current Leica M Typ 240.

Besides the registration of the type number, no information is yet known about the properties of the new Leica M. Until now, all cameras in this series are devices with a rangefinder and it is unlikely that Leica will deviate from this. Leica currently has several M models in its range, for example, in addition to the regular Typ 240, there is the Typ 246 with monochrome sensor.

Given that the current Leica M Typ 240 has been on the market since September 2012, it seems likely that the new Typ 262 will be the successor to that camera and not a new variant of the existing model. The type number reinforces that suspicion, but Leica has not officially announced anything yet. Leica may not announce the new M until next year; In September 2016, the Photokina fair will take place in Cologne, the Leica M Typ 240 was introduced at the same fair in 2012.

In October, Leica introduced the SL system, consisting of a mirrorless full-frame camera with electronic viewfinder. That device is equipped with the same 24-megapixel sensor as the Leica Q, a camera with a fixed lens. Leica may also use this image chip in the new Leica M.

Type numbers of cameras that have not yet appeared on RRA and Novocert regularly appear. Manufacturers submit information here about their new devices if they have Wi-Fi, for example, so that they can be certified.
