Photo supposedly shows ‘MotoMods’ for upcoming Moto Z smartphones – update
A photo has emerged that probably shows some accessories that can be clicked on the next generation of Lenovo Moto devices. The image shows three cases, including a camera module.
It’s not clear what the exact function of the three modules is, but the right-most ‘MotoMod’ is almost certainly a camera module. It may be an extension that adds optical zoom to the smartphone. Because the placement of the camera is different than on the device itself, it is likely that the accessory contains both its own lens and sensor.
According to previous rumors, in addition to a camera module, Lenovo will also come with a MotoMod with a pico projector and a variant with stereo speakers. Other manufacturers could also make extensions. The Motorola Moto Z smartphones have a sixteen-pin connector that seems to allow an electronic link between phone and accessory.
Update 18.16: Evan Blass has in a new tweet clarified what the three modules are. The left copy would be a projector, in the middle is a module with speakers from JBL and the camera module on the right would bear the Hasselblad brand name.
The photo is by Evan Blass published on his @evleaks twitter account. He is known for getting information about smartphones before the official announcement. He previously managed to get photos of the Moto Z Style and Moto Z Play and he came with the news that the successors of the Moto X series will get the name change to the Z series.
Lenovo is hosting an event on June 9 where it will announce new products. The Motorola Moto Z devices and the MotoMods will probably be officially unveiled there. The company previously announced that it will announce its Project Tango smartphone on that date.
