Netflix will stop offering the Basic subscription in Canada. New users can only purchase a standard subscription with advertising or a Standard or Premium subscription from the streaming service.

The current Netflix subscriptions available in Canada

Until now, an entry-level subscription with advertising was available in the country, but also a relatively cheap Basic subscription for one user, where no advertising was shown, as described The Winnipeg Free Press. Netflix says on the official Canadian support page: “The Basic subscription is no longer available to new or returning customers. If you are currently on the Basic subscription, you can continue to do so until you change or cancel your subscription.”

Following the change, Canadian viewers can purchase an advertising subscription for C$6 per month, allowing users to stream in 1080p on two devices simultaneously. The next ad-free subscription costs CAD 16.50 and is also supported on two devices at the same time, although customers of this subscription can also download content and add an additional sub-subscription for someone from a different household.

There is currently no reason to assume that Netflix will stop offering the Basic subscription in other markets. After all, there is no cheaper subscription with commercial interruptions available in the Benelux. The company was not available for comment. Canada was one of the first countries where the advertising subscription was launched, along with Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States, France, Germany, Japan, South Korea and Mexico.
