Microsoft has withdrawn the Windows 10 version for embedded systems from the test phase. This version, called Windows 10 IoT Core, is intended for small, inexpensive devices such as the Raspberry Pi. There is no additional charge for the operating system.

The IoT version of the operating system has been specially developed for embedded systems such as the Raspberry Pi 2 and the Minnowboard Max. To install the operating system on the hardware, a regular PC with Windows 10 is required, from there the ‘IoT Core’ can be installed on an SD card, which can then be inserted into the device.

The first test version of Windows 10 IoT Core was released in April. In the meantime, Microsoft has added support for WiFi and Bluetooth. Also, support for Python and Node.js has been expanded and numerous issues have been resolved. To celebrate the launch of Windows 10 IoT Core, Microsoft is organizing a home automation competition in partnership with Hackster.io. There are several prizes to be won, including trips to the Maker Faire in Rome or New York.
