Microsoft has asked Windows 10 Mobile testers to downgrade to Windows Phone 8.1, and then update to a new build of its mobile operating system from there. The company wants to know if that process is running smoothly.

The build will also be released for the Slow Ring and the Release Preview Ring in the Windows Insider test program, the Redmond company reports. Both things indicate that 10586.122 may be the build that Microsoft will use for the update. Users have been expecting that update for several months.

Although Microsoft already released Windows 10 Mobile for the Lumia 950, 950 XL, 550 and 650, the update has still not been released. Microsoft has never given a concrete date, but many users assumed it would take place at the beginning of this year, partly because providers have mentioned dates in January and February several times.

The company first releases updates for more recent models such as the Lumia 930, 640 and 535. There will eventually be updates for all Lumias that came with Windows Phone 8, of which the 920 and 820 are the oldest.
