MediaTek announces Helio P65 soc with two A75 cores

MediaTek has announced the Helio P65. This octacore has two A75 cores and is mainly intended for midrange smartphones. The soc offers no major improvements over the existing Helio P70 and P60.

The MediaTek Helio P65 has two powerful A75 cores that run at a maximum of 2GHz and six more economical A55 variants. For example, the P60 has another big.Little configuration with four A73 cores that run at a maximum of 2GHz and four more energy-efficient A53 cores. According to ARM, the A75 should be on average about 22 percent faster than the A73.

Graphically, the P65 has the Mali G52 2EEMC2. This GPU is less fast than the higher-positioned Mali-G72 that is in the P60, for example. This means that smartphones equipped with the Helio P65-soc will probably have less performance in 3D applications. Support for recording 4k videos is not available. Unlike the P60 and P70, it also lacks support for dual channel memory and UFS storage; there is support for emmc 5.1.

When presenting the P65, MediaTek mainly emphasizes the performance in the field of artificial intelligence; The company claims that the new SOC will be twice as fast as the previous generation, thanks to an improved NPU, and up to thirty percent faster than direct competitors in AI-related camera functions such as recognizing objects or scenes. The ai accelerator works with MediaTek’s Neuropilot SDK and Android Neural Networks api.

The manufacturer does not report anything about the production process at the unveiling of the Helio P65, but because, for example, the P60 and P70 are made with a 12nm process, that probably also applies to the new P65.
