The Japanese manufacturer Joled has opened its first production facility where printed OLED panels can be produced on a large scale. Mass production should start next year. The facility can produce 20,000 sheets of 1300x1500mm per month.

The new factory is located near the Japanese city of Nomi. According to Joled, OLED panels will be made for high-end monitors, medical monitors and automotive displays. The manufacturer previously indicated that it wanted to use the facility for OLED panels from 10″ to 32″. These are cut from the 1300x1500mm plates that are made in the factory.

In 2018, Joled started setting up the factory. Now that the facility has been commissioned, mass production is underway. First samples are made and they are sent to customers, if everything goes well, mass production can start in 2020. It is Joled’s first mass production facility.

Joled is a partnership of, among others, the former OLED divisions of Sony and Panasonic. The company has been working for years on OLED panels based on an RGB printing technique, which should make the production of OLED panels cheaper. Asus and Eizo have already released monitors with a 21.6″ OLED panel from Joled. However, those screens cost about five thousand euros. The costs will probably decrease when mass production gets underway.
