Japan Display has started the delivery of samples for 10.1″ screens with the ultra-HD resolution of 3840×2160 pixels. This will allow manufacturers to develop high-end tablets with a pixel density of 438ppi.

The consumption of the display is according to Japanese Display at 2180mW, of which 380mW for the panel and 1800mW for the backlight, measured when displaying white at the full screen brightness of 400cd/m2. This means that the panel based on the ltps technology would have comparable consumption to a 10.1″ screen based on the amorphous silicon technology with a resolution of 2560×1600 pixels.

The screen would also have a contrast ratio of 1100:1 and viewing angles of more than 160 degrees. The thickness is 2.35 millimeters. Although the first samples will be sent, it is not known when Japan Display will ship on a large scale and when the first 10.1″ tablets with the UHD resolution can be expected. Last year Japan Display already announced a 12.1″ screen. with 3840×2160 pixels on. The pixel density of that model is lower at 365ppi than the 438ppi of the 10.1″ variant.
