Instagram: target audience on iPad is not big enough for native app

There will be no iPad version of the Instagram app for the time being. According to the CEO of the Facebook sister company, the target audience that would use an iPad to access Instagram is not large enough to make it a priority.

Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri says that he hopes the app will come someday, but that it is not a priority for now. He does so in response to a message from YouTuber MKBHD, who notes that there is still no iPad app for the image-oriented social network. Instagram has been around for over ten years and started as an iPhone app.

In the meantime, the largest target group for Instagram is on Android, so says Mosseric in the series of tweets. Moreover, people share the most via direct messages and not via the feed or via the stories, claims the CEO. He doesn’t use numbers to back up that claim.

Users have been asking for an iPad version of the Instagram app for years. The app does work on iPads, but there is a bloated version of the iPhone app that doesn’t take up the entire screen. Android has had built-in scaling for years, so it works on tablets with Android at least fullscreen, but there is no custom interface for tablets.
