Google is testing summarizing websites with bullet points in Chrome with AI

Google is working on a feature that can summarize web pages and display them into bullet points that users can click on. The browser then takes the user to the part of the web page where that bullet point is explained. The feature only works in the US for now.

The function is called SGE while browsing and works in the Google app on Android or iOS, and should be available in Chrome soon. The feature is intended for use with specific web pages, especially longer pages with a lot of information and text.

On ‘some’ pages, users can use a button to have the page summarized by Google’s generative AI. This summary consists of several bullet points that the user can click on. When clicking, the browser goes to a highlighted part of the web page, which should give the user more information about the bullet point. Below the bullet points are also questions that readers might have that are answered in the article.

SGE while browsing only works on websites that are publicly accessible; for example, the feature doesn’t work with sites with paywalls. The function is part of Labs, where Google tests other generative AI functions and is currently only available in the United States. In addition to the summary tool, Google announced a feature to help developers understand written code and a feature that provides additional explanations for complex definitions and concepts within AI responses.
