A gamer has managed to run Crysis 3 at 8k resolution using a modified executable file. It didn’t run smoothly, however: the game only achieved 2 frames per second on the gamer’s system.

Gamer K-Putt used a tool called OnTheFly to hack into the Crysis 3 executable. This made it possible to change numerous graphics settings in the graphics engine CryEngine 3, such as the resolution and the draw distance. Thanks to a second tool, called SweetFX, the shaders could also be manipulated via the game engine, for example to adjust the contrast and color rendering.

K-Putt managed to take screenshots at resolutions of 8000×3333 and 3750×5000 pixels instead of the ‘normal’ 8k mode of 7680×4320 pixels. According to the gamer, the beautiful engine in Crysis 3 delivers considerably nicer images at such higher resolutions, with each screenshot being 24MB in size. He posted a selection on Flickr.

To take the screenshots, K-Putt had to keep switching back to standard resolutions to find a nice location for a screenshot. He then switched to the 8k resolutions to take a screenshot. In addition, the speed of the game dropped to just 2 fps. The gamer’s system has an Intel Xeon 1230v3 quadcore and an overclocked AMD Radeon 7950. It is unclear with which hardware the 8k images with 33 megapixels per frame can be run smoothly.
