Dolby Vision for consoles will be available exclusively for Xbox for two years
The Xbox Series X and S consoles will receive support for the Dolby Vision standard for games this year. Microsoft announced this on its website. According to Microsoft, Dolby Vision and Atmos for games are exclusive to Xbox consoles for two years.
Microsoft makes this known on its French-language Xbox website. Both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos will be available exclusively for the ‘Xbox ecosystem’ for two years, the company reports. This is due to a collaboration between Xbox and Dolby. “The Xbox Series X and S have been compatible with Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision since their release. These technologies will appear on these consoles later this year,” Microsoft writes in the blog post.
The upcoming release of Dolby Atmos for games on Xbox Series consoles comes as no surprise. Microsoft has been testing such support for some time. On May 14, the company reportedly began rolling out Dolby Vision to members of its Alpha Insiders group. According to previous reports, Dolby Vision would work with all Xbox games. These are games that are already available in HDR10, and SDR games that are still provided with HDR via the Auto HDR function of the Xbox Series X. The Apple TV and Spotify Video Podcasts apps for the Xbox Series X and S now also have support for the HDR standard.
Dolby, in turn, previously published a Dolby Gaming website, which now concretely mentions Dolby Vision and Atmos support for the Xbox Series consoles. Other consoles, such as the PlayStation 5, are not yet mentioned due to the exclusivity period. It is unknown whether Dolby Vision will be available later for PS5 consoles.
Microsoft also reports that Dolby Atmos will also be available for Xbox Series consoles this year. This audio technology, too, would remain exclusive to the Xbox ecosystem for the next two years. Xbox Wireless Headset owners can activate a Dolby Atmos license for free until September 30, according to Microsoft. After that trial period, users can purchase an Atmos license from Dolby. Users can do that by connecting these headphones to an Xbox console or Windows 10 PC, then installing and opening the Dolby Access app.
