DIY: Nintendo DS equipped with GPS module

Spread the love

A creative do-it-yourselfer started working with the Nintendo DS and saw some possibilities in the serial connection that this handheld console has. With the help of a small GPS module and Google Maps, he was able to turn the DS into a GPS system. Using a script, the maps of the area were downloaded from Google Maps and then saved together with the program on a CompactFlash memory card using GBA Movie Player. Each part of the map is 128×128 pixels in size. Using a formula, the coordinates received from the GPS module can be converted to the correct location on the gif images from which Google maps are built.
