Disney: video streaming service will be significantly cheaper than Netflix

Disney will offer its yet-to-launch video streaming service a lower price than competitor Netflix. The company admits that this is partly because there will be less content at launch.

That’s what Disney CEO Robert A. Iger said during a conference call about the most recent quarterly figures. His company plans to open its own video streaming service in 2019, which will include Disney movies and content from the various Disney channels and franchises. While no monthly fee has yet been disclosed, the price should be significantly lower than the cost of a Netflix subscription. Disney probably wants to try to steal customers from Netflix. Disney also wants to give a discount to people who visit its theme parks, or who are members of one of the clubs.

Incidentally, one of the reasons for the lower price is that the Disney streaming service will have less content than Netflix at launch. However, it is not yet clear how much exactly will be visible, and it is the intention that the video service will be further expanded in the long term.

Disney recently announced that it will be removing its content from Netflix in the United States in favor of its own streaming service. Due to existing agreements, the content will remain on Netflix until 2019, after which Disney can open its own service. Incidentally, in some countries the Disney content has already been removed from Netflix, because the agreements are not the same for every country.
