Crucial cancels plans for NVME SSD in Ballistix series

Crucial isn’t going to release a PCIe SSD in the Ballistix series anyway. The plans for the NVme SSD have been put on hold, according to the manufacturer. Parent company Micron showed the fast SSD at the Computex in early June and then said the product would hit the market at the end of this year.

According to a statement Crucial has given to TechPowerUp, the Ballistix SSD with PCIe interface is being scrapped in order to redeploy “assets and investments” elsewhere. It is not clear exactly what the manufacturer is referring to, but the NVme SSD aimed at gamers apparently no longer fits within the current plans. Crucial says it will continue to look at the potential of such products, but statements about their possible arrival will only be made if there are concrete plans.

In June, parent company Micron seemed to have serious plans to release an NVME SSD under the Crucial Ballistix name. The company showed a prototype at the Computex and a page about the SSD was also put online on the Ballistix website. That page has since been taken offline.

The Crucial Ballistix TX3 SSD in m2 form factor would be equipped with an SM2260 controller and 3d-mlc-nand from Micron. The prototype achieved a read speed of 2400MB/s and a write speed of 1000MB/s. There would be versions of 250GB, 500GB and 1TB.
