Bungie restricts support for Destiny on previous-gen consoles

Developer Bungie will soon end much of support for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of online shooter Destiny. Certain updates and content updates will not be released on these consoles.

Bungie will announce the news on its own website. From August, the games on the older consoles will no longer receive major updates and content updates, including the Rise of Iron expansion. It will also no longer be possible from that date to buy silver, Destiny’s in-game currency, with real money on those platforms. In addition, from that moment on, the leveling progress of Destiny characters will no longer be shared between the console generations. Smaller updates and content updates will still get the old consoles, such as Xûr offers and Crucible playlists. Bungie has set up a support page with information.

Bungie’s decision to severely curtail support for older console generations is not entirely unexpected. Rockstar Games made the same decision regarding Grand Theft Auto Online in mid-2015. The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of that game receive significantly fewer updates than their current-gen console counterparts. Call of Duty: Black Ops III received similar treatment. Rise of Iron, the next major expansion for Destiny, comes out on September 16 for Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
