Beyond Good and Evil 2 also requires constant internet connection in single player

Players must always be online to play Beyond Good and Evil 2, including in single player. According to Ubisoft, that is for “seamless navigation, dynamic updates and co-op”. The requirement can be problematic for players with unreliable internet. Co-op is optional.

Gaming news site Blue’s News managed to get the news to the surface. Ubisoft addressed the issue during a Q&A session on a live stream earlier this month. Ubisoft also summarized its content in a news post online. The question also emphasizes that what matters to the user is that he plays ‘solo’, which leaves no room for misunderstanding. What isn’t specifically addressed, however, is whether the game will also become unplayable if Ubisoft’s servers go down temporarily or permanently.

Games that require players to be online all the time sometimes throw players the wrong way, especially if those games can technically function without an internet connection. Whether it is also the case that BG&E2 could technically do that, however, is not clear at the moment.

A well-known example of a problematic always-online game from the past is SimCity 2013. The game required players to be online all the time, but the servers had a lot of problems early in the game’s life that made the game inoperable. In addition, EA and Maxis claimed that internet access was required to do certain calculations in the cloud, but this was not the case.

When Beyond Good and Evil 2 will be released and for which platforms, it is currently unknown. The original was released in 2003 and the second part was announced in 2008. However, the development was delayed a lot behind the scenes and the game has been actively developed since about 2012. In 2016, the game as it stands today was unveiled.
