Apple and BMW appear to be collaborating on a technology that will allow users to open a BMW car with an iOS device. The site 9to5Mac has found code in iOS 14 that indicates this.

The feature appears to be called CarKey, reports 9to5Mac, a resource with extensive access to Apple’s internal hardware and builds. @DongleBookPro on Twitter also show screenshots. Users can set the function to open the car or just the trunk. In addition, there is an option for Express Mode, which means that users do not have to take the phone out of their pocket and enter a code.

That Express Mode may use the ultrawideband chip in the iPhone 11 series to precisely locate the phone and thus unlock the car door in time. Digital Key 3.0 should be used for this. Digital Key is a collaboration of car manufacturers and telephone makers, and is intended to provide access to cars via smartphones. BMW does not deny or confirm the rumor. Apple has not responded. The automaker and electronics manufacturer previously collaborated when BMW was the first to integrate the wireless version of CarPlay into its models.
