Activision shows the first in-game images of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III in a reveal trailer. In the campaign, the shooter continues where 2022’s Modern Warfare II ended, namely with the return of the villain Makarov.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III is being developed by Sledgehammer Games and is a direct sequel to last year’s Modern Warfare II. Call of Duty games are always released annually, but the sub-franchises such as Modern Warfare and Black Ops always alternate. It is the first time since 2005 that two games from the same sub-franchise have followed each other.

According to Activision, the campaign will have new ‘open combat’ missions that should give the player more choice in how a mission is completed. The game’s multiplayer will feature many familiar modes, in addition to a new gameplay mode that Activision calls Cutthroat. In this game, three teams of three players fight against each other. Activision previously announced that certain content from MW II, including cosmetic items, operators, weapons and weapon blueprints, can be transferred to this year’s game.

Modern Warfare III will be released on November 10 for at least the PC and current generation consoles. It is not yet clear whether the game will also be released on the previous generation of Xbox and PlayStation consoles.

In a press release, Activision further hints at a major new Zombies mode, developed by Treyarch. So far, Modern Warfare games haven’t had a zombie mode, but the company is working on a concept called Modern Warfare Zombies. It is not clear whether this will be a separate mode within MW III or whether this will be a spin-off, similar to Warzone. The company calls it an ‘open world PVE experience with extraction and survival mechanics’. This will take place in the largest Zombies map yet.
