The YouTube app for smartphones is getting new pages with videos from ‘authoritative news media’. Users see this when they watch videos about certain news events. The page will then display recommended videos on that same topic.

YouTube will roll out the feature in ‘forty different countries’ in the near future, the platform writes on Wednesday. It is not specifically stated which countries this concerns. The pages will initially be available on YouTube’s mobile apps. News pages for desktop users and apps for televisions will follow later.

After release, users will see the news page when they click on videos about certain current events, which are marked with a ‘newspaper icon’. The page will then display long videos, live streams, podcasts and shorts on the same topic. An example from Google shows how the page opens for a video about flooding in Pakistan. The page then displays relevant videos and live streams from various media outlets, including Associated Press and Sky News.

YouTube will further invest $1.6 million in twenty news organizations from ten different countries. Those media will use that money to produce Shorts about current affairs. The media include Univision in the United States, AFP in France and Mediacorp in Singapore.
