Xiaomi has announced its Mi Mix 2, a smartphone with an extended screen and thin bezels. The new model has a smaller screen diameter than its predecessor, making the smartphone more handy. The device contains the Snapdragon 835-soc.

Xiaomi puts a 5.99″ screen with a 2:1 ratio in the Mi Mix 2. The previous model had a regular 17:9 screen of 6.4″. Due to the ratio and the smaller screen size, the dimensions of the phone have decreased. The strip under the screen has also become thinner. Despite this, the screen-to-body ratio has dropped from 84 on the Mi Mix to 81 percent on the Mi Mix 2. The side bezels are slightly wider. The new model has a smaller battery than its predecessor, the capacity is 3400mAh.

Device Height Width Screen Screen-to-body ratio
Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 151.8mm 75.5mm 5.99″ 80.8%
Xiaomi Mi Mix 158.8mm 81.9mm 6.4″ 84.0%
Samsung Galaxy S8+ 159.5mm 73.4mm 6.2″ 83.3%
Samsung Note 8 162.5mm 74.8mm 6.3″ 82.9%
LG V30 151.7mm 75.4mm 6″ 81.2%

As with the first model, the front camera is located at the bottom of the housing and the lens is finished with a black coating, so that the camera does not stand out. The back of the housing is made of ceramic material, while the strip around the device is made of aluminum. At the back is a fingerprint scanner.

The camera on the back sticks out a little bit and has a gold rim. For the camera, Xiaomi uses the Sony IMX386 12-megapixel sensor, with pixels of 1.25 µm and four-axis optical image stabilization. It is the same camera as the primary camera of the Xiaomi Mi 6.

Xiaomi used the screen to display sound in the Mi Mix by making it vibrate. This is no longer the case in the Mi Mix 2, but there is a speaker and a sound guide at the top of the housing, through which the sound is sent outside.

The smartphone contains a Snapdragon 835-soc, Qualcomm’s fastest chip at the moment. This is assisted by 6GB of RAM. The device must be suitable for worldwide use on 4G networks, with support for 43 bands. The tires commonly used in the Benelux are also supported.

Xiaomi has only disclosed the Chinese prices. There will be versions with 64, 128 and 256GB of flash storage for 3299, 3599 and 3999 yuan respectively. Converted with VAT, that is about 510, 557 and 618 euros. There will also be a Special Edition. This more expensive version has a housing that is completely made of ceramic. The special version will have 8GB of ram and 128GB of storage space and costs 727 euros (including VAT).

Furthermore, Xiaomi has announced the Mi Note 3. That is a larger version of the Mi 6, also with a dual camera. However, it has a mid-range soc, the Snapdragon 660, instead of the Snapdragon 835 that is in the Mi 6. The Note 3 has a 5.5″ screen and has a 3500mAh battery. The front camera has a 16-megapixel resolution, double the front camera of the Mi 6.

Update 10:09: Xiaomi has published the specifications of the Mi Mix 2 on its Chinese website. The dimensions show that the screen-to-body ratio of the new device is slightly lower than that of its predecessor. That information has been added in a table.
