Woman gets ten thousand dollars for crashes after unwanted Windows 10 upgrade

Microsoft has given a woman $10,000 after she filed a lawsuit against the company over an unwanted Windows 10 upgrade. Her computer became slow and crashed after the upgrade, she claimed.

The American woman used the computer for her travel agency. Last year her computer started updating to Windows 10, without her own permission, writes the Seattle Times. “I had never heard of Windows 10. No one ever asked me if I wanted to update.”

The update failed, but her computer would have slowed down after this and had experienced frequent crashes. When Microsoft’s help desk couldn’t help her solve the problem, she went to court to demand compensation. The woman would have won this lawsuit.

Microsoft appealed, but dropped it “to avoid spending on any upcoming complaints.” The company awarded the woman ten thousand dollars. Microsoft has been criticized for the intrusive way in which it sells its new operating system. Recently, the company even changed the function of the upgrade notification crosshair; users still entered the upgrade process after a click. Last year there were already reports of a class action suit in the US, which several users can join. It is not known what this is about.
