Users of 2011 MacBook Pros complain about GPU problems

Many users of MacBook Pros that Apple released in early 2011 complain of screen stuttering during graphics-intensive work. It seems to only concern 2011 15″ and 17″ models with AMD Radeon graphics cards.

MacRumors reports that there are many complaints about the issues with the Apple Support Communities, a Facebook group, and its own forum. Most complaints concern getting stripes in the image or the complete disappearance of the image while running applications that heavily load the GPU, such as games. After a reboot the picture would be back to normal.

Some users also experience spontaneous reboots after the appearance of a gray screen. Reinstalling OS X, as Apple prescribes for ‘gray screens’, would not help. It is unclear why the issues are occurring and Apple has not yet responded. The manufacturer has swapped hardware parts in some cases, but this would not have solved the problems, leading some users to refer to heat-related issues. In the past, Apple laptops with Nvidia GPUs suffered from heat problems.

These are exclusively 15″ and 17″ MacBook Pros that Apple released in February 2011 and have the AMD Radeon HD 6490M, HD 6750M and HD 6770M.
