US government maintains Huawei trade ban for now

Huawei is still blacklisted for trading with US companies. This was announced internally by the US Department of Commerce, according to Reuters. President Donald Trump said last weekend that Huawei would be removed from the blacklist.

The chief executive of the Office of Export Enforcement of the Bureau of Industry and Security, part of the US Department of Commerce, sent an email internally to clarify the policy regarding Huawei. This concerns, among other things, how employees should deal with requests for licenses from American companies to be able to supply Huawei.

Reuters saw the email and said that the Chinese company is still blacklisted and US companies are not allowed to trade with Huawei. US President Donald Trump said last weekend that US companies will be allowed to sell technology to Huawei again. In that case, it should only concern products that have no relationship with the national security of the US.

With his comments, Trump probably hoped to give a boost to negotiations between the US and China on a trade deal. The president’s ruling came as a surprise and it has been unclear since then what the status of US sanctions on Huawei is.
