Universal Pictures is working on Gears of War movie

The Coalition has announced on a live stream that a movie based on the Gears of War series is being made. For the film, the game studio has partnered with Universal Studios, one of the largest film studios in the world.

The film will have a different storyline from the games, Rod Fergusson, leader of The Coalition, told the YouTube stream in an interview. “You can’t just make a movie out of a game. There’s a lot of material to base a movie on, but you have to make a compelling story. You have to realize that if you just make a movie out of a game, it’s like film won’t be successful, so you have to figure out how to make it a bigger story.”

Fergusson says the film’s development is still at an early stage and can’t say anything about a writer or director yet. It is also unknown when the film will be finished. He does say that the game studio is working with producer Scott Stuber, who has previously worked on films such as Ted and A Million Ways to Die in the West.

Gears of War was originally developed by Epic Games, but Microsoft bought the studio’s license in 2015 and set up its own team. This team was previously called Microsoft Vancouver, but was renamed The Coalition when they started working on Gears of War.

Gears of War 4 will be released on October 11 for Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs. The game takes place twenty-five years after the events of the previous games, starring the son of the previous protagonist.
