Philips has announced its flagship television with Android. It is a 65-inch model with a UHD resolution that offers, among other things, access to the Google Play Store for apps, in addition to apps based on the regular Philips smart TV platform. The device also has Ambilight.

The UHD TV has been given the type designation 65PUS9809 and the smart TV will be on the market in the third quarter. The TV has a screen diagonal of 65 inches and in addition to the resolution of 3840×2160 pixels, the device has a hexacore SOC and four-sided Ambilight. This is the top model from the 2014 line of Philips TVs. Earlier, TP Vision, the joint venture that produces TVs under the Philips brand, already announced a 55″ model with UHD resolution, Android and three-sided Ambilight.

The TV does not run the recently announced Android TV, but the regular Android OS with version designation Jelly Bean 4.2.2. The TV also has HDMI 2.0 for UHD playback at 60fps. The TV also has a contrast enhancer and the 65PUS9809 supports local dimming. An upscaler ensures that non-4k content is scaled up to a UHD-like display.

TP Vision supplies a wireless subwoofer with the 65PUS9809 as standard, but what price the TV will receive when it is released in the third quarter is unknown, nor is the exact release date.

Update, 14.30: TP Vision reports that contrary to what was initially stated in the message, there is no support for the hevc/h.265 codec. Depending on market adoption by content creators and consumer demand, Philips is considering supplying the TV with an external player that does have support for HEVC.
