Spotify wants to revoke Songshift api access due to export to competitors

Spotify threatened to revoke the API access of the Songshift service. The service made it possible to transfer Spotify songs to other music services, but according to Spotify, that is against its terms.

Starting with Songshift version 5.1.2, it is no longer possible to transfer music, songs and playlists from Spotify to other music streaming services such as Apple Music, Deezer or Pandora. It’s only about exporting Spotify songs. It is still possible to import songs from other services into Spotify. Other music services will continue to be supported, the company writes. Songshift says it is disappointed in Spotify’s decision, but the company accepts it.

Spotify allegedly told Songshift that transferring music to competing services would be against the streaming service’s terms and conditions. Songshift was then given an ultimatum. It had to remove the export feature otherwise the whole api access would be revoked.

The decision is striking, because Spotify in particular has publicly spoken out against the dominant positions of platforms. The company started a coalition with Epic Games to lobby against Apple and Apple’s alleged abuse of power in the App Store. Spotify has not yet responded to the situation surrounding Songshift.

Update: Tweaker rootpowered notes that another service, TuneMyMusic, has had to stop the same feature.
