The specifications of the devkit of the HoloLens from Microsoft have become known. The headset runs a 32-bit version of Windows 10 on an Intel Atom processor of the Braswell generation with 2GB of RAM.

The editors of Windows Central decided to run Aida64 Mobile on the devkit copy they received in April. The specially modified version of Windows 10 is powered by an Intel Atom x5-Z8100 CPU running at 1.04GHz. Remarkably enough, this is a 64-bit processor, but the operating system itself is 32-bit. However, this does not lead to underutilization of the working memory in the HoloLens: that is 2GB. Of this, 114MB is used by the ‘HoloLens Graphics’ GPU and 980MB for the system. The remaining 900MB is available for the HoloLens apps.

Furthermore, the HoloLens from Microsoft has 64GB of flash memory, of which 54.09GB is available to the user. The wireless augmented reality headset is powered by a 16,500mWh battery that, according to Windows Central, is good for two hours of use. The built-in camera can take 2.4 megapixel stills and 1.1 megapixel videos at 30fps.

The reason developers have to pay $3,000 for an augmented reality headset with specs that are decidedly on the modest side will have to do with the development costs that Microsoft has to recoup in addition to the extensive sensor package. There is a possibility that when the HoloLens enters mass production, the price will automatically fall to a level that is manageable for the average consumer. It is possible that the specifications of the device have changed again by then.
