Sony launches compact High Definition camcorder

Sony plans to release HDR-HC3 in April, a compact and relatively inexpensive camcorder capable of recording High Definition video. The device can take and save photos on a Memory Stick, and video in normal or HD resolution (1080i) on a mini DV cassette. Photos can also be taken during video recordings. The resolution of the image sensor is 2.3 megapixels in 16:9 HD format and 1.7 megapixels in 4:3 standard format. For photos, the resolution is 4 megapixels. The HC3 has a Vario-Sonnar lens from Carl Zeiss with 10x optical zoom, while the electronics can add up to 80x digital zoom. Footage can be viewed on a built-in 2.7-inch LCD display, or via an HDMI connection to an HD monitor. According to Sony, the HDR-HC3 is the smallest and lightest HD camcorder on the market today. The dimensions are 82x78x139mm, and the weight is 560 grams, including battery and cassette. The price will be approximately $1700.
