Sony Computer Entertainment has announced that it has sold its stake in publisher Square Enix. The company has sold its shareholding, which contains a total of 9.5 million shares, to the Japanese brokerage firm SMBC Nikko Securities.

The sale of the share package, which includes 9,520,000 shares in Square Enix to be precise, has been made public by Sony on a company blog. The package would account for an interest of more than 8 percent in the publisher, with which Sony was one of the largest shareholders. The current market value of the package is estimated to be 4.8 billion yen, or about 34 million euros. Sony will announce the final proceeds later this week.

Square Enix is known as the publisher of franchises such as Final Fantasy, Hitman, Tomb Raider and Kingdom Hearts. The game publisher has worked closely with Sony for many years. This helped ensure that several Final Fantasy titles were released exclusively on the PlayStation platform. Sony has not yet revealed the exact reason for the sale of all its shares.
