The PlayStation 5 has reached the milestone of fifty million consoles shipped. The PlayStation 4 achieved the same milestone around the same time period. Sony had production problems with the PlayStation 5 due to the corona pandemic. The console is now more available.

Sony says that as of December 9, more than fifty million PlayStation 5 consoles have been delivered to customers. The console was first delivered to customers in November 2020; so the company needed just over three years to ship fifty million consoles. The PlayStation 4 also took just over three years to ship the same number of consoles.

The company had production problems with the PlayStation 5 until the beginning of this year, mainly due to the global chip shortages due to the corona crisis. This made the console difficult to obtain. These delivery problems have now been resolved. Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan says this is the PlayStation 5’s first holiday season where the console will be fully available. Last November would have been the ‘best’ November for sales of PlayStation consoles. Sony announced a thinner PlayStation 5 with a removable disk drive in October.

It is unknown how many Xbox Series consoles have been sold at the time of writing; Microsoft rarely provides figures on this. In June it was announced that 21 million Series consoles had been sold. A month later, Sony announced that the PlayStation 5 had been sold more than forty million times.
